21. Talk by Prof. Arthur Engelbert on Saturday 3rd March 2018 at National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai at 6.45pm

Inline image 3    Title of presentation: Connecting Aspects of Everyday Life through Design, Art, Media

Invites you for a presentation by designer and Professor, Arthur Engelbert, at National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai on Saturday 6.45 pm, 3rd March 2018 (followed by high tea).
On the occasion of the ongoing exhibition at NGMA, National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai
Ministry of Culture, Govt of India
DesigninIndia, D'source, IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay, and Kala Ghoda Arts Festival
With Typoday 2018 and Goethe Institute, Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai

'NATURE EMBEDDED - A Design Technology Experience' is an opportunity to understand the role of art, media and design in people’s everyday lives. And how this turns into content to be curated. When placed within the context of India's modern art Museum space or exhibition space, or its extension into everyday life, and given the early workings of the Curator (as an emerging persona in shaping new content) in comparison to the Curator's much more evolved role in the West, we ask the question:

Could the West help provide important lessons of learning for the Indian creative landscape?
Arthur Engelbert’s wide experience with workingat well reputed Museums in both Germany and abroad, such as at the Martin Gropius Museum and the Museum Island, both located in Berlin, becomes an especially good trigger to explore the role of art, media and design in connecting with the common man. And have him enunciate the role of the Curator in converting this information to become new knowledge that is both contextually interesting as well as relevant.

Within this, Arthur will particularly highlight the way the role of the curator has seen seminal changes across the last few years in Europe so that we are able to map this as information to our own contexts in India.

The reason to highlight this shift is especially important in India's context where the Curator has now emerged as an important persona in shaping new content for art and media. And yet, the word (“Curator”) itself continues to be loosely used, often with misplaced connotations.

About Professor Arthur Engelbert:

- Arthur Engelbert is faculty of Media Theory and Art Sciences at the School of Design/University of Applied Sciences, Potsdam. He obtained his doctorate with a study about "The Line in Drawing" under Gottfried Boehm and Max Imdahl in Bochum.
- Based in Berlin, Prof Engelbert has worked as Curator at well-known Museums including at the Martin Gropius Museum in Berlin. He has also run a multimedia business (MIB, company in Berlin) for ten years and been on the Board of the "Werkbund Archiv" in Berlin.
- From 2002 until 2004, he was in charge of the study group "Critique of Image Media". Peof Engelbert lectures in the field of education in contemporary fine arts at different universities and art academies.
- In 1999 he established an interdisciplinary research project (Cultrans) that entails numerous funded study trips (Gibilmanna 1999, Cairo 2001, Johannesburg 2003, Mexico City 2005, Hongkong 2007, Jerusalem 2008, Mumbai 2010, and others). "Cultrans" examines cultural transfers that take place between cultures and arts. A prime focus of the intercultural project "Cultrans" has been Israel for seven years.
- In 2012 he founded alongside others the "Institute for Applied Reality Change" (i-a-r.org). Since 2013 he has developed the transcultural project "Pedestrian Republic" (expanded into the research project "Digital Public" since 2016). In 2016, he founded the Associazione "Cultrans” E.V.

18. NATURE EMBEDDED - A Design Technology Experience

Inline image 3
N A T U R E- EMBEDDED
- a design technology

 Experience

3rd February to 4th March 2018, NGMA, Mumbai
Venue: National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) Mumbai, India

About:

‘Nature Embedded: a Design Technology Experience’ is an exhibition consisting of fifteen different medias that range from the conventional calligraphy, expressive photography, tessellated murals and product installations, to the more unconventional and emerging medias that leverage ethnography, infographics, motion graphics and interactivity(s) to convey life’ myriad messages.

The Exhibition themed on the Human’s everyday and everyman relationship with Nature hopes to bring to attention the fact that cultures such as ours had once consciously built their lives around Nature’s ways by following Nature’s rhythms, tapping into Nature’s resources, and emulating Nature’s designs. In time, this process of following Nature around had come to become tacit, ubiquitous and sub-conscious.

In the process, Humans had also found it imperative to protect and preserve Nature from the deleterious effects of unbridled greed that Humans can be capable of.

In offering this tribute to Nature, the Exhibition finds it opportune to leverage Design and Technology as expressive tools with which to convey the idea of our intersections with Nature. And yet, remaining artistic as a celebration of Art as a mirror of Society,

Finally, the Exhibition also attempts to showcase the fairly systematic process that lies behind the use of a design cycle, deployed here from start to finish. And in sharing this with our audience, we hope to make the process of design and technology a more transparent affair than it usually is.

Competition Detail:
We invite you to participate by submitting a Cartoon created by you based on any of the 5 elements of nature (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Space). We invite cartoons which humorously communicate the theme, by rethinking on the elements of nature in terms of conservation, preservation and recycling. Rethink situations, rethink life, cleanliness, greenary, energy resources and everything else we use day in and day out to keep going. Rethink and depict how respect for the elements of nature can fully give a new lease of life by either going back to nature or going back into the design process as a new paradigm that can affect our world.Cartoonists are invited to interpret the theme as representations through designing of Cartoons.

Theme:
Nature is the source of all existence on earth. And, in all that we have done for the longest time, we have drawn inspirations from Nature. In many parts of the world, it continues to be so. Be it the designs that manifest themselves in our everyday lives or in the systems that we have developed. Often forgetting that Nature and Humans work best when in symbiosis – that the things we create in inspiration from Nature should help both Human and Nature, rather than destructing one or the other.
