Introduction
Uttarakhand, formerly Uttaranchal, is a state in the northern hemisphere of India. It is often referred to as the "Land of the Gods" due to the many holy Hindu temples and pilgrimage centers found throughout the state. Uttarakhand is mainly known for its natural beauty of the Himalayas and nearby places.
Uttarakhand's diverse ethnicities have created a rich literary tradition in languages including Hindi, Kumaoni, Garhwali, Jaunsari and Bhotiya.
Uttarakhand Bhotiya is a group of people residing in the upper Himalayan valleys of Uttarakhand. Their caste Bhotiya, derives from the word Bod which is the Classical Tibetan name for Tibet. In Chamoli, Uttarkashi, and Pithoragarh districts, the Bhotia Tribes Weave distinctive carpets and ashans (for seats), with designs that are having a strong influence on Tibetan and Kashmiri influence with geometric, Tibetan and Buddhist motifs in gold blue and monk red colours.
It was found that in Uttarakhand maximum number of respondents (32.7%) were preparing dun, ashan, durri, chutka, namda and thulma. These articles are made by Bhotiya people in high and mid-hill regions. They prepare thick and heavy products, considering warmth as the most important feature. Other articles i.e. shawl, pankhi, loi, sweater (hand-knitted), socks, gloves, caps, wall hanging etc. were made all over Uttarakhand.
