Preparing the Base

  • Printer-friendly version

A piece of cotton cloth is dipped several times in glue made of tamarind seeds and water. This is then sun-dried for stiffness, after which, a paste of chalk powder and gum is applied to it. This is dried in the sun again and finally, ‘khaddar’ stone is rubbed over it to make it smooth. Another layer of processed cotton is placed on this and gum is applied to it. This is done to stick the two layers, now called the ‘Patta’ (canvas). Small circles, about 3 inches in diameter, are cut out from the Patta to make the Ganjappa cards.
