Redesign of Gym Equipment
Introduction

The project 'Redesign of Gym Equipment (Home) deals with the designing of a fitness equipment for the purpose of strength training at home.

Fitness can be categorized into three parts, viz. strength, stamina and flexibility. There are number of home‐gyms available in the market, which are bulky, heavy looking and consume lot of floor space as they are in big size. Also, these are mostly suited for spacious houses with a dedicated area for a gym.

The aim of the project was to design a 'home‐gym' that could be used in an urban Indian apartment and was borne out of the desire to design compact and truly 'usable' strength‐training equipment for the home. The idea was to make the product small and neat‐looking without affecting on the bio‐mechanics of the exercises.

Efforts were directed towards reducing the size, weight and complexity of the final product. This involved simplifying the mechanism of the exercises, redesigning the handles and other parts so that they fit in a small volume and use of foldable/ collapsible parts.

The final product is less than half the size of its nearest competitor, self‐standing and has a small footprint. The product is not only highly compact (700 x 400 x 1700 mm.), but is also aesthetically unique in that it blends in well with the home environment. It is designed such that it can be placed along a wall, thus saving precious space and the body panels offer freedom of having different colors and textures to suit the users taste.
