According to THE HINDU, A multi-storey building (MSB) is a building exceeding four floors and/or 15.25m in height (for hospital buildings, the height can be up to 17m). More than 12000 high-rise buildings have already been constructed in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Building with forty or more stories and taller than 150m (490 ft) is generally considered a skyscraper. Since 2016 Government of India made it mandatory for building owners to construct fire exits in buildings. Most of the buildings are not equipped with firefighting equipment. Especially old buildings society owners are not willing to spend money on fire exits and refugee area construction.

Due to increasing population in metro cities, buildings are being made in the smallest area possible. There is only 60 metre ladder in Mumbai which can reach the 20th floor. Most of the high rise buildings have only one staircase and a lift, both of which are useless in the event of fire. Therefore the people living on the top floors get trapped in apartments and they find no way to evacuate the building.

Aim of the Project

Above facts leads to the decision of designing a fire safety kit for people living and working in high-rise buildings as their personal rescue system. This safety kit should be easy to use and independent of other persons or commodities. The system will consist of rope, harness, descender and a fixture for mounting the system to rod or any kind of rigid support. This system will be helpful in commercial buildings, residential buildings, malls, hospitals, schools and all other high, mid and low rise buildings in the city
