Inter-state migration for jobs has increased in the past decade. These migrants find it difficult to get along with locals because of language and cultural differences. This project aims to help migrants (adult learner) in language learning. The main focus of the project is to enable the learner to develop conversational competence.

In this project, Marathi as a target language for Hindi speakers has been detailed out. Since, Hindi and Marathi share Devanagari Script and have similar grammatical structure, the language lessons focuses on bringing out the grammatical and cultural differences in this language pair.

Based on earlier research on language learning, special attention has been given to keep the content interesting and relevant to the user by keeping the lessons in form of a conversation between migrant and locals. The context of the conversation is similar to real life situations, which migrant faces.

An evaluation with six users was carried out for duration of three days. All the users showed progress in speaking and listening skills. Test also revealed some usability issues of the design.

In future, a portal can be developed through which user can learn a language by taking language lessons and later can practice conversational skills by communicating with expert users. Learners are also native speakers of other languages. This can be leveraged to provide native speakers in all languages. This will provide a smooth transition from learning to application in real-life situations.
