by

Filigree is a traditional silver jewellery craft known for its intricate, lace-like designs made from twisted silver wires. It is especially prominent in Cuttack, Odisha, where it is called Tarkashi, and in Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh. Cuttack’s designs often feature floral patterns, particularly the rose, while Karimnagar’s highlight creepers and leaves. Practiced mainly by the Sunar (goldsmith) community, the craft dates back to the Mughal era. The process involves drawing fine silver wires, shaping them, and assembling small components into detailed patterns. Items created include jewellery such as necklaces, nose rings, bangles, and anklets, as well as decorative pieces like trays, bowls, candle stands, idols, birds, and replicas of the Konark wheel and Taj Mahal. The craftsmanship lies in precisely fitting tiny wire pieces into a frame. Cuttack remains a renowned center for this art, attracting global attention for its exquisite and delicate silver filigree work.
