Colors of Limbdi

A very fertile area for growing cotton
by

Limbdi is small taluka in the district of Surendranagar (Gujarat) which is a very fertile area for growing cotton. Over the years, this has led to migrations and settlements of communities of weavers engaged in a plethora of weaving styles. The district is one of the largest producers of ‘Shankar’ cotton in the world and is also home to the first cotton trading exchange in India. A lot of craftsmen still spin khadi on the traditional charkha while others are involved in the more intricate Single Ikat weaving and Tangalia (wool weaving with dana-work). Stone carving, copper casting, brass moulding are some of the other crafts that the community is very famous for.
