The Art Deco period is a strong influential visual style period. It appeared for the first time in 1920 in France. Traditional craft motifs with machine age style imagery and materials are mixed in this style. Bold geometric shapes, rich colors, and heavy ornamentation can be usually seen in this style. This period influenced all art forms and became very popular during the 1930’s and 1940’s, which was the time it became popular in Mumbai also. Art Deco architecture in Mumbai is one of least noticed style though Mumbai has the second largest number of Art Deco buildings in the world. The Art Deco seen in Mumbai is mixed with the Indo Saracenic style of architecture and hence is aptly called Deco –Saracenic. The main feature of the Art Deco seen in Mumbai is not just the style but also how a variety of materials was used by the architects to make their own interpretations of the style.
