An attempt to control his environment, a means of generating light has long been recognized as a basic need in our life. Reason that we humans do not have a well‐developed sense of smell or hearing to provide directions; we normally depend upon vision for guidance. Therefore, a source of illumination is basic to a man's need.

The 'Design of Luminaries ‐ Luminaries Design for Showrooms' this project was undertaken to show some newer dimensions in luminarie design for showrooms. The narrator looked at it as a means to explore an aspect of design with the intention to invoke a contemporary Indian image in the form of designing the luminaries.

Luminaries:
Luminaries have two dimensions to consider.
• Luminaries fulfilling only utilitarian aspects like that of large office, factory, mines, tunnels    etc.
• And, illumination with identity and decor as a context.

The approach followed by the narrator for the project was based upon the latter idea, i.e. illumination with identity and decor as a context. The lighting design as a system and luminaries expressing certain aesthetic quality were the two levels of approach considered.

Considering few scenarios, 'Commercial Establishments' was chosen for the study as they are retailing exclusive Indian goods which have unique links with past.

In order to understand the concept of showroom design, several visits were made to various kinds of showrooms ranging from antique goods shop, Indian emporiums, and cottage industry emporiums to jewellery showrooms. Out of which a detailed study has been put down of a jewellery showroom.

Product Brief:
To design a family of luminaries with a contemporary Indian image for showrooms selling exclusively Indian products. The design of luminaries should complement to the image of the space and the products being retailed. And the luminaries can be batch produced using a combination of craft and industrial production.
