Characters become the dominant and important part of traditional Kerala dance forms. These characters have highly expressive gestures, make-up, and dresses. Many characters come from the mythological stories of India, thus comprising of the hero and the villain, the saint and the sinner. The characters play the role of Krishna, Arjun, Dhusasanna, Duryodhana, Panchali and others. Expressions of these characters are perfected by the performers with dedicated practice and passion. It is the get-up and the characters portrayed that make these dances so special. Kerala dance forms include classical dances and drama performances of Thullal, Thiruvathirakali, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, and others. They are age-old traditional dances that are popular worldwide even today. These are the images of the elegant statues of different Kathakali characters and characters of other Kerala dances placed in the art gallery at Kalamandalam in Kerala.
