2. Hospital Bed - Designing ‘MADE FOR INDIA’ Hospital Furniture:

Background:
Godrej Interio, a major brand in office & home’ furniture in India, wanted to foray into the Hospital Furniture domain. The patient room furniture is a major product category and the client wanted Onio to design a completely new hospital bed & allied accessories based on deep user understanding & market positioning. Available hospital beds were either cheaply done Indian beds or very expensive European/American beds designed around ergonomics for people in those countries.

Onio’s Solution:
Onio worked on the design right from user research, concepting, prototyping to manufacturability and created a range of patient room furniture. Whether state-owned or private hospital chain, the bed was as affordable as it was user-friendly. Full-scale working prototypes were built & tested for performance before it was delivered to the client.

Honours:
This hospital bed design won the NID-Business World Design Brilliance Award in 2008 India Today named it one of the top ten medical innovations for 2009.

3. Future of Small Cars - Design Research and Strategy for an Auto Major:

Background:
Increased competitive pressure in India’s compact car market is a reality today. This led to one of India’s largest car makers examine present and emerging trends in car usage patterns and emerging needs of car owners and intenders. It approached Onio Design to conduct a comprehensive design research for understanding emerging directions in the A segment cars in India. This research aimed at understanding the changes happening across big and small families, gender, age groups, occupations, across metropolitan and large urban cities and car segments.

Onio’s Solution:
Onio conducted Ethnographic & Design Research in 8 metropolitan cities across India covering about 150 respondents. 120 ethnographic interviews and more than 50 ride-along were conducted with car owners. That apart, opinions from domain experts - orthopedics, car accessory dealers, fashion designers, car dealers, automotive designers etc. were also sought. The result was a comprehensive report with pointed recommendations on parameters like usage habits, styling, safety, storage, controls, features and accessories. Comprehensive articulation of the present situation and its evolution in the future formed the crux of the report.

4. Design of Takshak - Disruptor Mounted Robot:

Background:
Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) approached Onio with a mandate to design a swift six-wheel robot for diffusing IEDs and suspicious objects. This device would be used by the army, paramilitary forces and police for counter – insurgency operations. The Industrial Designers at Onio conceptualized the product with a distinct chassis and body like an automobile to aid easy aggregation of multiple parts.

Onio’s Solution:
Onio developed a remotely operated portable device capable of being deployed in cross-country terrains and confined spaces within culverts. Not only was it a completely ready-to-deploy product but it also was far more user-friendly, compact and aesthetically sophisticated to its predecessors.

5. Tribal Italia -
Design of an Up-Market Inverter - Amaron:

Background:
India’s rising electricity demand has outstripped supply. The result is increased power outages & shortages. This led to explosive growth in the Home UPS segment. Many players have crowded the segment leading to customer confusion & brand clutter. Amaron mandated Onio to create a path-breaking UPS design which would be a flagship product of a new brand Tribal Italia. Onio observed that UPS systems were mostly confined to hidden areas like attics & basements. They were too technical to be “main stream enough” to be kept inside the home. This critical insight guided Onio’s design thinking.

Onio’s Solution:
After a comprehensive evaluation of the consumer electronic market across the country, Onio came up with the following design features for Amaron’s next gen. inverters:
- A patented cradle rocker mechanism to pull out:
The battery for maintenance and hidden castors for mobility,
- Stadium shaped table top with LED lit top (The table can be used to keep mobile phones or    laptops)
- Power sockets on the body facilitate direct charging of gadgets,
- European definition in styling and Easy user interface.

6. Stationary Exercising Scooter - Industrial Design and Development:

Background:
A physiotherapist, after seeing some kids riding a scooter came up with the idea of converting this scooter action into a stationary exercising unit so that it will benefit the people suffering from body joint pains, rehabilitation after surgery etc. Stationary Exercising Scooter (SES) is a physio-workout equipment, which replicates the scooter playing action on a stationary platform. SES is targeted towards the patients suffering from post-surgery ankle, knee, and hip patients, various ankle and knee conditions that do not need a surgery, back pain patients, arthritis, etc. The client approached Onio for working on his idea and converts it in to a functional product also, the client defined the requirements.

Onio’s Solution:
The final solution was reached keeping in mind the brief specified by the client and the outcome of the initial study. The final design included following features:
- Single belt treadmill with scooter mounted on one side.
- Lever mechanism to change the side of the scooter for riding with both the legs.
- Adjustable speed, Inclination adjustment, Speedometer, calorimeter, pulse meter.

A full-scaled working prototype was made which is then tested for its performance before it was delivered to the client.

7. Design of Lexi 5n - Designing India’s fastest selling pen:

Background:
The number of people buying pens is proportional to the growing rate of literacy; hence a huge market exists in India. Lexi is one of the leading manufacturers of affordable writing instruments in India with close to 40% market share in high growth regions. Lexi’s existing product range strategically priced at Rs. 5 per unit was severely tested due to cut-throat competition. Also, previous design efforts had not paid off. So Lexi approached Onio to come on board and work together on a range of pens.

Onio’s Solution:
After trying various design options, prototype testing and iterations we reached at the final design which while designing the 5n, Onio realized that Indian consumers put pens in the shirt pockets and hence the look of the clip is a important parameter at the time of purchase apart from writing ergonomics & ink quality.

With design of the bold clip, 5n smoothly offered customers of other brands a refreshing experience at the same cost. Thus, making it one of the highest selling pens in the country. Incidentally, Indian paan (after-mint) shops stock only fast-moving, low-priced items. Lexi turned out to be the only well-designed items to be stocked by these paan shops across India.
