The Gateway of India is located at the tip of the Apollo Bunder overlooking the Arabian sea. It was build during the British Raj in India. It an 85 ft, high arch built with basalt. The fishermen community of Mumbai, before the construction of the arch, used the place as a crude jetty. The renovation led to using the same place for landing for British Governors and other prominent personalities. The construction of the monument was to commemorate the arrival of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary in December, 1911 when they were on a visit to India. Though they could only see a cardboard model of the structure. The foundation stone was laid on the 31st of March, 1911 and the construction was completed in 1924. It is built in the Indo- Saracenic style with a mix of Hindu and Muslim elements. The arch is done in the Muslim style while the decorations are done in the Hindu style.
