Orchha was founded in the sixteenth century by the Bundela Rajput chieftain, Rudra Pratap, who chose this stretch of land along the Betwa river as an ideal site for his capital. It lies in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. On a seasonal island on the bank of the river, which has been surrounded by a battlement wall, stands a huge palace-fort called Jahangir Mahal. Numerous cenotaphs or chhatris dot the vicinity of the fort and the river. Elsewhere about the town there is an unusual variety of temples and tombs, including the Chaturbhuj temple (built on a vast platform of stone), each contributing to the nostalgic beauty that is Orchha.
