Paper Kites for Uttarrayan Festival

Colorful kite papers are locally called as Thirveni.
The paper is diagonally folded into half and cut.
The half cut sheets are placed inside the stencil and cut in the required size and shape.
The shape of the kite is obtained.
Bamboo sticks are burnt using a burner.
The sticks are burnt to create design patterns on them.
Thin cotton threads are pasted on the ends of the sheet to avoid the paper from tearing.
Bamboo stick is fixed in the center of the kite.
Another bamboo stick is bent into arc and pasted diagonally.
The ends of the stick are locked by pasting the paper over it.
Pieces of paper is folded and cut into require shape to make design.
Finished product of kite with beautiful contrasting color.

The kite papers used in making kites are locally known as “Thirveni”, are very light weighted. Stencils made of cardboard piece, shaped as kite is used to get the proper measurement to make a kite. After cutting thin cotton thread is pasted on the sides to avoid the paper from tearing or to prevent it from getting torn while flying the kite. The craft paper is diagonally folded into two equal halves. The designs patterns are made using different colorful papers separately and pasted on these craft papers.

Bamboo stick is then pasted diagonally which supports and strengthens at end of the corners. The stick which is pasted straight is known as “Tadda” and the one which is pasted in an arc is known as “Kammaan”. Tail of the kite is called as ghesiya or poonch. A small piece of paper which is used to stick the sides of the kite is called as Chippa or Patti.
