The Namrodoling Monastery, also popularly known as the Golden Temple is located in the Coorg district in Karnataka. The monastery also houses a Tibetan camp where around 6,000 monks stay. The temple dates back to 1960, when the then Government of Mysore allotted 3,000 acres of land to the Tibetan refugees who fled with their religious leader Dalai Lama while facing destruction of their culture and religion by the Chinese. The temple is built in the traditional Buddhist style. The walls of the temple have colorful paintings depicting Gods and Demons from the Buddhist Mythology. The outer walls and pillars are adorned with motifs and inscriptions. The temple houses three big statues namely the Buddha (at 60ft. in height), Guru Padmasambhava (a.k.a. Guru Rinpoche at 58 ft. in height) and Buddha Amitayus (at 58ft. in height).
