About eleven kilometers from Gaya town (in Bihar) is Bodh Gaya, the place where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment under a Peepal tree (also called the Bodhi Tree). The main monastery of Bodh Gaya used to be called the Bodhimanda vihara (Pali) but now it is called the Mahabodhi temple. For Buddhists, this town is the most important of the four main pilgrimage sites related to the life of Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini and Sarnath. In 2002, the Mahabodhi temple became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
