  • If this was in color you must been seeing atleast 4 colors. The absence of theses focuses more on the subject at the doors and creates and environment inside the train of a daily monotonous chore. The inside of the train lies in shadows and the subjects are illuminated.

  • Light and darkness. Devoid of everything else.

  • Here I wanted to stress only on the geometric shape without the blue sky and its reflection on to the building. This gives it a different perspective. It highlights shapes and patterns.

  • Daily grind.

  • Passing by years.

  • As seen during a clouded evening.

  • Black and white helps in amplifying the negative space. To compose in a way to extract the subject.

  • Spaces inside homes reflect nostalgia.

  • Frames inside frames.

  • Here I only wanted to focus on the people who were offcourse in colorful clothes but my focus was on the silhouettes as all of us become one in admiration of Taj Mahal.

  • Hide and seek.

  • Attempt to bring the old charm onto these pillars at Qutub complex in Old Delhi.

We have color photographs since decades. Black and white is assumed as a relic of the past. So what is the best and effective way to record. Well it depends. We take photos to express emotions about our world with each of our own unique way. In order to get an emotional reaction through visual arts, abstraction is effective and also a simpler stance. That I what for me black and white photography is about.  I take this as something that imparts a unique stillness to the image. Black and white allows us to think more about the relationship between the main subject and background and the play of light. It limits the distraction with color and narrows it down to few key elements. And to top it all, it helps in thinking about the composition as the center subject with lightning. I am still learning photography and presenting some of my black and white explorations here.

For anyone who in interested in black and white photography should check the words of Ansel Adams and Marl Ellen Mark.
