A world heritage site, Bhimbetka is located in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh state of India. The rock shelters of Bhimbetka are at a distance of 45km south east of Bhopal. This archaeological site has more than 700 rock shelters of which 400 caves have paintings, which shows the life of communities from the Mesolithic to the mediaeval times. It displays continuous sequence of cultures from Paleolithic to the Historical period. Bhimbetka’s painted rock shelters were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2003.

This rock shelter is also known as ‘Zoo Rock’ due to its large scale and numerous stylish animal paintings. The shelter displays total of 453 figures, which also includes 252 animals of different species. It shows ninety human figures, one bird, six decorative designs, two enclosure and ninety-nine fragmented figures. The shelter has approximately ten layers of superimposed paintings mostly belonging to Mesolithic, Chalcolithic and Historical period.
