Built by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, the Aga Khan Palace in Pune stands as one of the most prominent landmarks in the history of the Indian Freedom Struggle. It was built in 1892 in order to help the poor people living in the neighbouring areas of Pune as that area was drastically hit by a famine. Working in the palace could help these people with some form of livelihood. During the Quit India Movement Mahatama Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi along with his secretary Mahadev Desai were held captive in the palace from 9th August 1942 to 6th May 1944. During this period both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai breathe their last. The palace still has their shrines in it's complex along with some rare articles pertaining to the freedom struggle.
