Title: 'Text Invader'

Abstract: Text Invader is a system of typographic interventions that aims to bring about a typesetting environment that automates the aesthetic as well as contextual concerns previously manifested in the output of Deconstructivist typographers throughout the 20th century. It is essentially the exercise of creating a virus code, which gets embedded in a font using a type design editor such as Fontlab or Glyphs, etc. The virus is coded in such a way that it automatically becomes activated when setting text with that particular “infected” font in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Virus content consists of vector drawings and illustrations or modified letterforms that are created by the students.
Materials/ tools to be brought by student participants:
Computer installed with Fontlab or Glyphs (trials are free for one month). Adobe Indesign and Illustrator. Sketching materials such as pen, drawing pad, etc.

Dr. Onur Yazıcıgil
PhD, Sabancı University, Istanbul
Onur Yazıcıgil is a typographer and design educator based in Istanbul. He received his MFA in visual communication design from Purdue University in the United States and PhD in graphic design from Mimar Sinan University. He has served as a board member at ATypI between 2019–2013 and has lectured on various topics in the field of typography. Since 2009 he’s been teaching typography and graphic design classes as a faculty member at Sabancı University. His research interests range from Latin and Arabic typographic history to 19th century Ottoman metal typefaces, with a particular emphasis on Ottoman naskh typefaces.
