Design education in its modern form was kindled in India with establishment of NID in 1963. Industrial Design Center was set up in 1969 by the Government of India under the auspices of Indian institute of technology Bombay. Prof. V. N. Adarkar was the Adviser for the first five years. Prof. Sudhakar Nadkarni took up the headship and was responsible for setting up of IDC. It began with an academic programme in industrial design. Aims and objectives put down by the committee for formation of the center were: "The aim of the Industrial Design Center is to prepare students to enter into new creative activities as professional industrial designers who with experience and maturity can reach the highest level of design practice, research and development necessary for the industry.
As the design center emerged, it was realized that industrial design in a developing country with its varied cultural heritage has a vital role to play in national development. It soon became clear that a profession constantly dealing with development and the future of people will have to inculcate values in the society appropriate to fulfill the physical, social and cultural needs and aspiration of the people; in a manner acceptable to the majority. The efforts at the center have been concentrated on the task of inculcating these 'desirable values' through education, practice and propagation.
These efforts were assisted by UNDP funds in the early eighties, which helped IDC in evolving a two year postgraduate program in industrial design. The Masters of Design program in Industrial Design was started in 1980. Taking advantage of the on going UNDP assistance, IDC also started a masters program in Visual Communication (Communication Design) in 1984. This masters program has evolved as strong program and the students are very well received in the industry. IDC expanded its MDes programme by starting post graduate level programmes in Interaction Design, Animation Design and Mobility Design in 2006. The doctoral programme is also initiated to encourage a new generation to give strong design research support for all design activities.
During the last five decades there have been many changes in the design education scene in the country. With better awareness in design, emerged a greater scope for designers in industry. There are now many government as well as privately funded educational institutes offering educational programmes in Design. Many engineering, architecture as well as fine art colleges has ventured new design programmes.
IDC is celebrating its Golden Jubilee in year 2019-2020. Taking this opportunity, we are hosting this Design Education Symposium to bring together leaders in design education from different design institutes in India. Objective of this symposium is to take an overview of Design education today and to initiate a discussion on Design Education for future.
NID started the first undergraduate diploma programme in design in 1964. For many years, this was the only undergraduate programme in design in India (later this diploma programme was converted into a degree programme). It comprises of design foundation (fundamental courses) leading to various specialisations.
IIT Guwahati started the first undergraduate level degree programme in 1997. It is an integrated programme (without specialisations) balanced with few engineering courses. In past two decades more private institutes like Srishti, MIT Pune, initiated BDes. IDC started its BDes programme in 2015. With the availability of a national level entrance examination UCEED many more institutes are joining hands to offer BDes programme. Many engineering programmes have started adopting design courses to bring creativity and innovation in engineering at undergraduate level.
With this background, the symposium will mainly focus on design education at
Undergraduate level. We would like to deliberate on the following:
1. Design Pedagogy
(a) Design Fundamentals
(b) Integrated Design vs Specialisations
(c) Models of Design Learning
2. Introducing Design and Innovation in Engineering Curriculum
(a) Design Course + Design Project
(b) Minor in Design
3. Recommendations for Design Curriculum
